DLM Dock Leveler Lip Keeper or Lip Assist Rod Broken? Signs You Need to Replace Them
On a DLM mechanical dock leveler, the lip keeper and lip assist rod work together to control the hinged lip at the front edge of the deck — the piece that actually rests on the trailer bed. When either part wears out, the lip stops behaving the way it should, and that's usually the first thing operators notice long before the rest of the leveler shows problems.
What the Lip Keeper and Lip Assist Rod Actually Do
The lip keeper is a mechanical stop that holds the lip in its extended position once the deck reaches full travel. The lip assist rod connects the lip linkage to the leveler's frame, controlling how the lip swings out and folds back as the deck cycles up and down. Together they keep the lip from free-falling onto a trailer bed or drifting back into the pit while a forklift is crossing it.
Signs the Lip Keeper Is Worn Out
A failing lip keeper usually shows up as a lip that won't hold its extended position — it creeps back toward the pit under load, or it slams down hard instead of settling onto the trailer bed. You may also see visible wear grooves, rounded-off edges, or a keeper that's bent out of shape. DLM levelers come in a few lip lengths, so matching the right keeper matters: a 20" Lip Keeper for "C" Series, an 18" Lip Keeper, and a 16" Lip Keeper are all sized differently and are not interchangeable. Measure your existing lip length before ordering, or pull the model plate if the leveler is still legible.
Signs the Lip Assist Rod Has Failed
The lip assist rod takes a lot of leverage every cycle, and it's the part most likely to bend if a lip gets slammed or a trailer pulls away before the leveler is stowed. Watch for a lip that flops loosely instead of following the deck's motion, a rod you can see is visibly bowed, or a lip that binds partway through its swing. DLM uses different rod lengths across its leveler series: a 34" Lip Assist Rod for "C" Series, a 1" x 44" Lip Assist Rod, a 34" Lip Assist Rod for "D" Series, and the full Lip Assist Bar Assembly (44" Bar) if the whole linkage needs replacing rather than just the rod.
Ordering the Right Part the First Time
Because DLM's "C" and "D" Series use different rod lengths and lip sizing, the single most useful thing you can do before ordering is measure: lip length end to end, and rod length from pin center to pin center. If you're not sure which series your leveler is, a photo of the data plate or the lip assembly itself is usually enough for us to confirm the right part before it ships.
