Vehicle restraints and wheel chocks prevent trailer separation and unexpected movement during loading and unloading — one of the most critical safety systems at any loading dock. Restraints engage the trailer’s rear impact guard (RIG); wheel chocks block the drive axle as a secondary measure.

Automatic vehicle restraints (AVRs) engage mechanically or electrically when a trailer backs in, providing consistent protection without relying on operator compliance. Manual restraints and wheel chocks are lower cost but require a defined procedure and enforcement. Key specs: RIG engagement range, rated restraint force (typically 35,000–75,000 lbs), and compatibility with your dock leveler interlock system. Interlock systems that prevent leveler operation until the restraint is engaged are strongly recommended for high-traffic facilities.

Safety/Compliance: OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(k) requires procedures to prevent trailer movement during loading/unloading. ANSI/ITSDF B56.1 references vehicle restraint use. Many insurers and safety auditors require documented restraint procedures.
