Why bumper condition matters more than people think
Dock bumpers absorb the impact every time a trailer backs in, and most facilities don't think about them until one is missing entirely or crushed flat. A compressed or cracked bumper stops doing its job long before it looks completely destroyed — once the rubber loses its rebound, trailer impact starts transferring straight into your building's foundation, dock leveler frame, and bumper mounting hardware instead.
How to measure for a replacement
Bumpers are specified by height x width x projection (thickness), in that order, and getting this wrong is the single most common ordering mistake. Measure your existing bumper's face dimensions and the distance it projects off the wall, and match projection first — a bumper that's too thin lets trailers strike the building or dock leveler lip, while one that's too thick can interfere with trailer alignment on some trucks.
Laminated vs. molded rubber bumpers
Laminated bumpers, like the 12" x 10" x 4-1/2" Laminated Bumper, are built from layered rubber sheets bonded together and tend to hold up better under constant, heavy trailer traffic. Molded rubber bumpers — the kind used by Blue Giant, Kelley, and Serco — are typically less expensive and perform well for moderate-traffic docks. Round bumpers, like the Kelley Round Bumper, are common on older or lighter-duty installations and mount differently than rectangular styles.
What dock bumpers cost in 2026
Standard molded rubber bumpers run from roughly $19 for small trailer-guide-style bumpers up to around $200 for full-size laminated units. Don't forget the hardware
Bumper failures often take the mounting bolts with them, especially on older installs where the anchors have corroded.
