How to Replace a Dock Leveler Snubber: Chain, Spring & Cable Assemblies by Brand
What a Dock Leveler Snubber Actually Does
The snubber is the part that keeps a mechanical dock leveler's deck from slamming down hard when it's released from the stored (upright) position. It's a chain, cable, or spring assembly rigged between the deck and the leveler frame that controls the descent speed as the deck comes down to rest position. When the snubber is worn, stretched, or broken, the deck drops uncontrolled — which is hard on the leveler's structure, loud, and a real hazard for anyone standing near the pit.
Signs Yours Needs Replacing
A snubber chain that's stretched or has elongated links won't hold the deck as tightly, so you'll notice more slack and a harder landing than the leveler had when new. A snubber spring that's lost tension behaves the same way — less resistance, faster drop. If you can see broken links, a frayed cable, or a spring that's visibly stretched out of shape compared to its coils, that's your sign. Left alone, a failed snubber usually leads to secondary damage: bent deck restraint plates, cracked welds, or a lip assembly that's taken repeated hard impacts.
Chain, Cable, or Spring — Know Your Setup
Different manufacturers built their leveler snubber systems differently, so getting the replacement right starts with knowing which style your leveler uses:
Rite-Hite levelers commonly use snubber chain assemblies — the 511D100 Snubber Chain Assembly, the 112918 Snubbing Chain Assembly, and the 109567 Snubber Chain Assembly cover different leveler models and chain lengths.
McGuire levelers typically use the 512-942 Snubber Chain Assembly, a 32" chain-style setup.
Poweramp levelers run either cable or spring-style snubbers depending on the model: the 5265-0008 Snubber Cable Assembly for cable setups, and the 5265-0009 or 5265-0003 Snubber Spring Assemblies for spring-style, plus the standalone 0941-0006 Snubber Spring if you only need the spring itself.
OHD levelers use the 38-10 Snubber Assembly, a 12' cable-with-spring combination.

How to Replace It
Before starting, always secure the deck with a proper maintenance strut — never work under or near a raised leveler deck supported only by the snubber or hydraulic pressure. With the deck safely supported, disconnect the old chain, cable, or spring from its mounting points at the deck and frame, noting the exact attachment holes since snubber tension is set by which link or loop you use. Install the new assembly at the same attachment points, then test the deck's stored-position release through a full cycle before putting the leveler back into service, watching for smooth, controlled descent rather than a hard drop.
